Glass reactor system

Controlled addition and removal

Combine batch containment with continuous process control.

A semi-batch reactor combines batch and continuous operation. One reactant is typically charged to the glass vessel while another is introduced gradually, or a product is removed continuously as the reaction proceeds. This arrangement is particularly useful when the rate of addition affects heat release, selectivity or phase behaviour. In gas–liquid reactions, for example, gas can be bubbled continuously through a batch of liquid instead of charging an impractically large gas volume at once.

Controlled feed

Add a second reactant at the required process rate.

Gas–liquid duty

Bubble gas continuously through a liquid batch.

Selective reaction

Manage concentration to reduce unwanted side reactions.

Continuous removal

Withdraw gas, precipitate or separated product during reaction.

Salient features

Use feed and removal strategy to shape the reaction.

Semi-batch operation offers an additional control variable where a simple batch charge does not suit the chemistry.

Metered reagent addition

Introduce one reactant slowly to control concentration and reaction rate.

Gas sparging

Feed gas continuously through a charged liquid phase for effective contacting.

Side-reaction control

Limit instantaneous reactant concentration where selectivity is sensitive.

Product withdrawal

Remove gaseous, precipitated or phase-separated product as it forms.

Visible phase behaviour

Glass construction exposes bubbling, precipitation and liquid separation.

Custom thermal control

Jackets, agitation and controls can be matched to the heat-release profile.

Operating strategies

Configure the semi-batch sequence around the chemistry.

Feed, agitation, thermal control and product-removal arrangements are engineered for the required sequence.
