Bromine production plant for sea bittern

Sea-bittern processing

Recover high-purity bromine from concentrated salt-field brine.

Solar salt production concentrates naturally occurring bromide into the residual mother liquor known as sea bittern. After salt crystallisation, the bittern commonly contains bromine in the low grams-per-litre range and can be processed economically into elemental bromine. The hot process oxidises bromide with chlorine and strips the liberated bromine with steam. Condensation and purification then produce bromine to the required quality while the debrominated brine leaves the process. Feed concentration and flow can vary by location and season, so each plant is balanced against representative bittern data.

2–6 g/L feed

Typical bromine range stated for concentrated sea bittern.

≥99.5% product

Purification is configured for the required commercial quality.

0.1% residual

Debromination target for brine and bromide streams.

Hot process

Efficient reactive stripping at elevated temperature.

Salient features

Designed around corrosive service and a changing natural feed.

The final equipment arrangement, materials and controls are selected around the process duty and site conditions.

Feed-characterisation led

The material balance reflects bromine content, salts, flow and seasonal variation.

Chlorine oxidation

Bromide in the bittern is converted into elemental bromine.

Steam stripping

A hot reactive column transfers bromine from brine into the vapour phase.

Separate purification

Distillation refines condensed crude bromine to the agreed specification.

Corrosion-resistant construction

Glass and glass-lined steel protect the process at temperature.

Complete plant scope

Process engineering, equipment, controls and commissioning can be integrated.

System configuration

Review the hot-process plant arrangement.

The combined reactive-stripping section handles the sea-bittern feed, followed by dedicated condensation and purification equipment.
