Distillation assembly over a glass-lined reactor

Large-scale glass distillation

Add a visible, corrosion-resistant overhead system to the GLR.

Glass-lined reactors provide production-scale containment for corrosive chemistry and high-pressure steam service. A borosilicate glass overhead assembly adds visible vapour handling, condensation and fractionation for solvent distillation, reaction-distillation and reactor cleaning between products. Each assembly is configured around reactor size, available height, operating pressure, separation objective, site constraints and automation. Shell-and-tube glass or graphite condensers are preferred where larger vapour loads exceed the practical duty of a coil condenser.

Up to 10 kL

Batch assemblies for larger GLRs are quoted on request.

Batch or continuous

Configure the overhead system for the operating mode.

Simple or fractional

Match separation stages to product requirements.

API and fine chemicals

Designed for corrosive solvent and chemical service.

Salient features

Engineered around the reactor, separation and site.

The glass assembly changes with vapour rate, operating pressure, azeotrope behaviour, available height and instrumentation philosophy.

Process-specific overheads

Simple, reaction and fractional distillation arrangements are available.

Condenser selection

Glass shell-and-tube or graphite-tube exchangers handle larger duties.

Azeotropic capability

Assemblies can be configured around phase separation and reflux needs.

Solvent recovery

Recover process solvents and support cleaning during product changeover.

Instrumentation

Manual or automated operation can be matched to the plant requirement.

Site integration

Layout accounts for total height, access, supports and existing GLR nozzles.

Operating modes

Configure the assembly for batch or continuous distillation.

Both modes use the glass-lined reactor as the feed vessel, but vapour rate, vessel role and control requirements differ.

Batch distillation assembly

Glass overhead system for a charged reactor batch

The GLR supplies the batch vapour load to a simple or fractional glass assembly for solvent recovery or purification.

Design inputs

Reactor size
Standard assemblies up to 10 kL; larger on request
Available height
Total overhead installation envelope
Operating condition
Pressure, temperature and vapour rate
Separation
Simple, fractional or azeotropic distillation
Continuous distillation assembly

Steady-state separation with the GLR acting as reboiler

Continuous operation can use a smaller reactor because liquid and vapour inventories are lower and are governed by the distillation rate.
