Anhydrous HCl generation system using the calcium-chloride route

Dry HCl generation

Release hydrogen chloride while recycling the calcium-chloride solution.

Adding concentrated calcium chloride solution changes the hydrochloric-acid/water vapour equilibrium, allowing hydrogen chloride to be liberated beyond the normal azeotropic limit. Metered hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride enter a stripping column above a steam-heated reboiler. The bottom calcium-chloride solution is reconcentrated and returned to the process. Overhead vapour is condensed in stages with cooling water and chilled brine; the comparatively dry HCl gas then passes through a mist eliminator to the consuming process. The route is used for hydrochlorination and preparation of IPA–HCl or methanol–HCl where moisture must be controlled.

Low effluent

Calcium-chloride solution is reconcentrated and reused.

30% turndown

Operate below nameplate capacity when demand changes.

Dry gas

Staged condensation and mist elimination remove moisture.

API applications

Supports hydrochlorination and solvent-HCl preparation.

Salient features

A recycle-based route designed for practical operation.

Materials, utilities, controls and equipment arrangement are selected around the feed and required product.

Azeotrope suppression

Calcium chloride makes additional HCl available for stripping.

Reagent recovery

Dilute calcium-chloride bottoms are evaporated and reused.

Staged cooling

Cooling water and chilled brine progressively condense water vapour.

Mist elimination

Final entrainment removal protects the consuming process.

Simple operation

The route is designed with fewer pumps and instruments.

Mixed construction

Materials are selected for each corrosive and thermal duty.

Process configuration

Understand the calcium-chloride recycle process.

Final capacity, materials and instrumentation are confirmed against the process data and site utilities.
