HCl gas generation process by the sulfuric-acid route

Sulfuric-acid stripping

Strip and dry HCl with concentrated sulfuric acid.

Metered 98% sulfuric acid and 30% hydrochloric acid enter a controlled mixing zone. Sulfuric acid releases hydrogen chloride from solution; heat from dilution, supplemented by a small steam input, supports the evaporation step. The HCl gas then passes through a sulfuric-acid drying zone and trap before delivery. Hot dilute sulfuric-acid bottoms are cooled for storage, with the system arranged to minimise dissolved HCl remaining in the spent acid.

>99% HCl recovery

Most feed HCl is released as product gas.

Up to 75 kg/h

Larger requirements can be reviewed separately.

Few utilities

Cooling water and a small amount of steam.

Simple operation

Controlled mixing, drying and spent-acid cooling.

Salient features

High gas recovery with integrated sulfuric-acid drying.

Materials, utilities, controls and equipment arrangement are selected around the feed and required product.

Controlled feed mixing

Measured acid flows stabilise gas generation.

Dilution heat recovery

Exothermic sulfuric-acid dilution supplies much of the evaporation heat.

Gas enrichment and drying

Sulfuric-acid contact removes residual moisture.

Final acid trap

A polishing stage supports dry-gas delivery.

Cooled spent acid

Bottoms are cooled before transfer to storage.

Low HCl loss

Thermal design limits HCl retained in the sulfuric-acid bottoms.
