Sulfuric acid dilution system

Spent-acid recovery

Remove water from weak sulfuric acid for reuse.

Chemical processes often dilute or contaminate concentrated sulfuric acid, creating a large spent-acid stream. Concentration from roughly 20 to 70 wt% removes water by evaporation and can return the acid to useful service. Single- or multi-stage natural-circulation, thermosiphon or forced-circulation evaporators are selected around feed strength and available heating media. Multi-stage plants reuse vapour and boiling-point differences to reduce steam demand, while design also accounts for foaming, gas release and precipitation.

20–70%

Recover weak sulfuric acid to reusable strength.

Single or multi-stage

Balance simplicity against steam economy.

Multiple circulation types

Natural, thermosiphon or forced circulation.

Low acid volatility

Sulfuric-acid vapour is minimal up to about 70% concentration.

Salient features

Recover acid while managing steam, fouling and gas release.

Materials, utilities, controls and equipment arrangement are selected around the feed and required product.

Water evaporation

Concentrate dilute acid without consuming additional sulfuric acid.

Vapour reuse

Multi-stage arrangements reduce fresh heating-steam demand.

Circulation selection

Match natural, thermosiphon or forced circulation to feed behaviour.

Foam and gas allowance

Design considers gases released during concentration.

Solids management

Precipitation and contaminant behaviour influence equipment selection.

Reuse-oriented product

Recover up to approximately 70% acid for suitable plant duties.

Process configuration

Select evaporation staging around energy and feed behaviour.

Final capacity, materials and instrumentation are confirmed against the process data and site utilities.

Single-stage concentration

A direct evaporation route for simpler recovery duties

Selection factors

Feed
Weak or spent sulfuric acid
Product
Up to approximately 70 wt% sulfuric acid
Circulation
Natural, thermosiphon or forced circulation
Best fit
Simpler duties where steam economy is secondary
Multi-stage concentration

Reuse vapour energy across multiple evaporator stages

Selection factors

Energy strategy
Reuse vapour through pressure and boiling-point differences
Stage count
Governed by feed strength and available heating media
Process checks
Foaming, gas generation and precipitation
Best fit
Larger duties where reduced steam use justifies staging
